GUYURRMIRR DHIMURRU - MAKARR DJALALTHA GAPU BUR’NAP MONUK LIL
(GOING TO THE SOUTHEAST SALTWATER)

Exhibition
6th September - 11th October

Opening Night Saturday, 13th September

This exhibition presents a rare and powerful opportunity for audiences on the South Coast of New South Wales to engage directly with the unwavering creative vision of Yolŋu artists from Ramingining, Arnhem Land.

Featuring traditional and contemporary weavings, painted stories, and new works that embody the depth, strength, and continuity of Yolŋu culture, it reflects both ancient foundations and an evolving connection to land, water, and story. For many artists, this marks their first journey beyond their homelands — a moment to share stories, lineage, and knowledge with new audiences across new Country.

Held in major collections nationally and internationally, the painted artworks build on a 65,000+ history using only four colours red, yellow, white and black. For the weavings, the plant material is worked and treated in the ways passed on from ancestors and in doing, recreate and identify with sacred ceremonial objects which connect Yolngu to each other, to their past, their Creative Beings and to their Country. Each piece carries profound spiritual meaning, ancestral authority, and a deep connection to place.

Going to the Southeast Saltwater marks a significant cultural exchange between Arnhem Land and the South Coast — a journey across land and sea, and a powerful act of sharing culture between communities.
